Using & Caring for Our Products
There are a few things to keep in mind in terms of using and caring for our letter openers and jewelry:
Our Finishing Process
Each piece is finished by hand to highlight the natural beauty of the materials. We use Watco Danish Oil to enrich and protect the wood, bringing out its depth of color and unique grain patterns while leaving a smooth, natural feel. For the sterling silver accents and findings, we apply a thin layer of Renaissance Micro-Crystalline Wax, a museum-grade polish that protects against tarnish and keeps the metal’s bright, lasting sheen.
What to Expect Over Time
Many species of wood naturally darken over time as they’re exposed to air and light, and the woods we use are no exception. This change happens because oxygen and light react with compounds in the wood—especially lignin and natural oils—causing slow chemical changes that deepen the color. The process is called oxidation, and it’s similar to how metal tarnishes or fruit turns brown when it’s cut open. The darkening usually happens gradually, starting at the surface where the wood is most exposed, and gives the material a richer, warmer tone (for example, purples or oranges may eventually turn deep browns).
While you can't stop the oxidation process, the following tips may help your piece mature at its own pace:
- Keep it out of direct sunlight. UV light speeds up oxidation and color change.
- Maintain stable temperature and humidity. High heat and moisture make chemical reactions happen faster.
- Avoid harsh cleaners or polishes. Strong chemicals can strip protective coatings or react with the wood itself. Use wood-safe furniture wax when needed.
Cleaning Tips
Clean letter openers and wooden jewelry features with a commercial-grade furniture wax and non-abrasive (e.g., microfiber) cloth. Avoid cleaning them with water or chemical-based liquid cleaners.
Clean sterling silver jewelry findings with a non-abrasive polishing cloth. Micro-crystalline wax can be reapplied as often as needed (which will depend on each item's wear-and-tear). To reapply, use a very small amount on a non-abrasive cloth and buff lightly.
Other Preservation Tips
While our letter openers are shaped as knives and feature "blades," they're not weapons (obviously!) and are not designed to function as heavy-duty cutting tools.
We do not recommend using letter openers to:
- Pry open/remove staples,
- Scrape materials off surface areas, or
- Open heavily taped packages.
Such use could break off blade tips, chip blade edges, or result in overall breakage of the piece.
